Creamy Stove Top Hot Cacao Oatmeal

Cocoa and cacao {the unroasted version of a cocoa bean} have been labeled superfoods for the high antioxidants load. They’re also an excellent source of iron. And since cacao is unroasted it actually contains even higher amounts of nutrients than cocoa, tho cocoa powder is totally a fine sub in this recipe

Makes 1 large serving or 2 child servings

Ingredients

2 cups milk of choice or water (canned coconut milk is my favorite for taste + texture)

1 1/4 cup old fashioned oats

2 tbsp cacao powder, such as Trader Joe’s or Navitas

2-3 tbsp maple syrup

Creamy peanut butter or other nut/seed butter

Very dark chocolate

Directions

Add milk and oats to a medium sauce pan over medium high heat, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer for about 5 minutes or until liquid is mostly absorbed and oats are thick. Stir in cacao powder and maple syrup, adjusting for taste preference. Spoon into a bowl (at this point if for kids I add a couple of ice cubes or very cold milk to cool it down), top with a drizzle of nut butter and your favorite dark chocolate. Enjoy!
